The Amalfi Coast looks beautiful from the road. From the sea, it is something else entirely. This guide tells you everything you need to know before booking.
📲 Book Your TourThe SS163 Amalfitana is one of the most famous coastal roads in the world. It is also, in peak season, one of the most congested. Buses squeeze past each other on hairpin bends, and the views are frequently obscured by tunnels, railings and traffic.
From the sea, there is no traffic. The cliffs rise vertically out of the water. The villages — Positano, Praiano, Amalfi — appear exactly as they were meant to be seen: dramatic, colourful, and impossibly beautiful. Many of the best swimming spots, grottos and fjords are entirely inaccessible by road.
The most photographed village on the Amalfi Coast, and the most beautiful from the water. The pastel houses stack vertically up the cliff face, the beach is narrow and crowded, but seen from a boat it is genuinely one of the most striking sights in Italy. Anchor offshore and swim to the beach, or moor at the pier for a lunch stop.
A dramatic narrow fjord cutting through the cliff face — barely wide enough for a small boat. Completely invisible from the road above. One of the most surprising and beautiful spots on the entire coastline, accessible only by sea.
A sea cave near Conca dei Marini lit by emerald-green light filtering through an underwater entrance. Entry is included in the tour. Less famous than the Blue Grotto in Capri, but arguably more beautiful — and almost never crowded.
Nerano Bay is a marine reserve with some of the clearest water on the coast. Da Adolfo is a legendary beach restaurant accessible only by boat — the red boat picks you up from the water. Reservations recommended; your skipper can call ahead.
A full Amalfi Coast day tour from Sorrento takes approximately 8 hours, departing at 10am and returning around 6pm. This allows time for Positano, Furore, the Emerald Grotto, a lunch stop and swimming. A half-day version (4–5 hours) is available if you only want to cover Positano and Nerano.
